general information

as you will be aware cars have many parts including transmittion system , braking system and engine the following may help you to understand.. .

Transmission

manual/ automatic

the following video shows how gears are controlled via the gearstick in a manual car (one that you physically change gear in) the cogs shown represent the gears and the thing they are attched to is known as the shaft (used to link the gears to the engine and wheels. the red cogs in the video show the ones that have been engaged or pressed against by the collar ot the main gear selector (if you don't understand go to this website http://auto.howstuffworks.com/transmission4.htm)

All the gears are attached to the drive shaft which turns the wheels. The engine powers the gears. there are 2 shafts because the one underneath is known as the countershaft/layshaft and this brings power from the engine and uses it to rotate the gears. the collar then uses dog teeth to engage the gear when the gear has been selected.

0-62 = this tells you how long the car takes to reach 62 mph. why 62 because this is equal to 100 kilometers per hour which is the speed used to measure car acceleration. It can also be 0-60 miles per hour or the time it takes the car to cover a quarter or half a mile

Top speed = this is the maximum speed in miles per hour that the car can go at. on my website i have put the sources where the information has come from at the base of most of my pages the websites i have used seem to be the most consistent and reliable. If you do not trust my noting down of the information a hyperlink is available on most pages for you to check the stats for yourself.
